Distracted Driving is More Than Just Texting and Driving

Most people summarize distracted driving as simply texting and driving. However, distracted driving can take on so many other forms: eating, talking on the phone, looking for directions, changing music, etc.. I recently cam across a distracted driving article that knocked me on my butt. Here is a quote from the article about texting and driving that made me start to require my children to put their cell phones in the glove-box when driving, "The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released data showing that drivers who send and receive text messages take their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds out of every six seconds while texting. At 55 mph, that means that during that time, the driver travels the length of a football field, including the end zones, without even glancing at the road." The length of a football field, without even glancing at the road. Wow. The fact is that laws are beginning to change to crack down and enforce harsher penalties when distracted driving is proven the cause of an accident. Subsequently, insurance policies are beginning to mirror these changes too. The moral of this story .... removing all internal-car distractions from your driving conditions is a great idea.
